‘Dangerous’ household items to ‘never’ place on your windowsill or risk ‘damage’
When decorating the home, it can be tempting to treat the window as an extension of space by storing items on windowsills. However, Adam Pawson, property expert from leading window specialists, Safestyle, has shared seven items that should never be stored near windows or on windowsills.
The expert said: "It is always advisable to keep your windowsill free of aerosols such as deodorants and sprays.
"This is particularly important in hot spells of weather.
"This is because when exposed to direct sunlight, these items can easily build up pressure and explode, which could cause long-lasting damage to your window fitting."
Another key item to avoid placing on windowsills is light-reflecting objects.

These can be very "dangerous" when exposed to intense, direct sunlight.
Adam noted: "Make sure to move objects such as beauty mirrors away from direct sunlight and off windowsills, especially in a heatwave.
"They can concentrate the sun's rays and cause other nearby objects such as clothing to set fire.
"This goes the same for other reflective items such as glasses of water too."

According to the pro, there are some items which should never be kept on a windowsill, regardless of the weather.
While a windowsill may seem like the perfect place to position home decor items such as a photo frame, this is not advisable.
Adam explained: "Firstly, depending on how your window opens, these items could potentially restrict access to opening and closing your window which we wouldn't recommend as it limits your ability to ventilate your home.
"Secondly, if the window is open, a gust of wind could cause valuable items to blow over, causing damage."

The window expert continued: "Keep windowsills free from birthday cards, vases, bottles and anything else to ensure that you can effectively clean them.
"Keeping it clutter-free will help to ensure that you can clean the whole of your window, getting into the corners of the frame.
"This is also important if you’re looking to sell your home, as keeping your home free of clutter will help to attract potential buyers."
While you may want to maximise space in your home by lining cleaning supplies along windowsills, this isn't recommended.
The changes in weather and temperature can cause cans to combust or make the chemicals less potent.
Make sure to keep cleaning supplies away in a drawer or cupboard.
Adam said: "To prevent damage and mess on your windowsill and to your window fitting as a whole, make sure to remove candles as the wax could easily melt and can be difficult to remove.
"Another key reason to keep candles away from windows is that while they don't appear to be a hazard, if exposed to direct sunlight, they can ignite, posing a fire risk."
If you’re short on space in the bathroom, many people may opt to store shower gels and other bathroom products on the windowsill.
While this may seem like a good idea, leaving items next to windows can cause them to turn slimy. "Instead, store away from the window in a cupboard to keep items unspoiled."
